Star Wars in 2016: A Look Ahead
With The Force Awakens dominating the Box Office (it is at 600 Million Dollars domestically and over 1 Billion Worldwide!!!), many new fans have been made and many people that were once fans are coming back to the beloved franchise. One common question that has been asked is what next? This is simply a guide for the fans, letting you know what is next in the franchise... from comics, to books, to animated series, and the films themselves. 2016 is shaping up to be an exciting year for the fans of A Galaxy, Far, Far Away. While most of the dates in this article are pretty much a certainty, there could be some movement on the list. If we see any we will try and come back and update as regularly as possible.
Let's start with the Comics:
What is new?
This is a mini-series that goes into the time period between Episode 1 and Episode 2. Not much is know of this decade long time period and it is exciting to see these two characters come together and give us a new story.
C-3PO. Issue #1 (the only issue). February 24th, 2016
This comic one-shot is rumored to tell the story of how our favorite annoying droid got his red arm that we see him with in The Force Awakens.
What is Continuing?
Star Wars. Issue #14. January 6th, 2016. Vader Down Part 5.
Vader Down is a crossover storyline that is taking place between the Flagship Comic “Star Wars” (a monthly comic) and the equally excellent, “Darth Vader” (also monthly). If you want to jump in the comic world I would suggest this one. With Issue #15 we will get a brand new Obi-Wan story during the time he was looking over a young Luke Skywalker on Tatooine.
Darth Vader. Issue #15. January 15th, 2016. Vader Down Part 6 (the final part).
The “Darth Vader” series follows everyone's favorite baddie during the time before The Empire Strikes Back (The Star Wars comic takes place in the same timeframe as well). If you are enticed by the Dark Side then this comic is for you.
Kanan. Issue #11. January 24th, 2016
If you don’t know who Kanan is then you are missing out. Kanan is one of the central characters of the animated TV show Rebels. He is one of the last remaining Jedi who survived Order 66 and is currently helping fight in the Rebellion. The comic often dips back into Kanan’s past and tells some of the stories of his days during the Clone Wars. This is a surprisingly well written (and drawn) comic that competes with both Star Wars and Darth Vader. It is also a monthly series.
If you don’t want to collect individual issues you can purchase trade paperbacks of story arc’s (a collection of several issues) within these comic titles. There are also some of the past mini-series comics released as trade paperbacks. Here is one that releases at the beginning of 2016:
The Lando series is my personal favorite storyline of all of the comics that have been released so far. It add such a depth to the relationship between Lando and Lobot. It also deepens the viewing pleasure of The Empire Strikes Back. It helps you understand what brought Lando to Cloud City. A must read.
Let's move to the Books:
New Republic: Bloodline, by Claudia Gray. March 29th, 2016
Claudia Gray surprised many with her YA novel Lost Stars (See my review here). I was one of those that was surprised and while there is not much information about this upcoming book available, other than the fact that it takes place 6 years before The Force Awakens, I am very excited to read Gray’s next story in the Star Wars Galaxy.
This is the second Aftermath novel by Wendig. The first one released to mixed reviews, but with the cover to Life Debt featuring the Millennium Falcon many think that our favorite smuggler and his hairy sidekick is going to be front and center.
There is also an unnamed novel that will release sometime in the summer of 2016. When we get more info on it we will let you know right here.
Now let's look at Television:
Rebels Season 2 (the second half), start date TBD
Rebels season 2 has been generally good this season. It follows a group of rebels right before the very first Star Wars film, A New Hope, took place. When we took the mid-season break the central character of Ezra Bridger discovered some big news regarding his family. This is a show for the whole family and both adults and children will find things to like about it. We are unsure of when the season will resume, although we have heard it will be back sometime in January. When we find out we will update it here.
There are other kids books and comic titles to be announced. We will be sure to update this article when we find those titles that we feel are essential. Our hope is that this helps you as you start to prep for the the next film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Rogue One will release on December 16th, 2016.
